Name of Historic Site: New Groningen/Jan Rabbers Informational Designation
Description of Historic Site: The village of New Groningen prospered as an industrial town unlike the surrounding Dutch settlements that prospered as farming towns. Jan Rabbers immigrated to New York and there he awaited word from Rev. Van Raalte to join previous settlers of the area. He originally set up Groningen where there is now New Groningen Cemetery on Paw Paw Drive because he thought the river was more passable at that location. Rabbers then had to move the settlement to one mile to the north because of a new road between Holland and Zeeland that gave better access.
