Name of Historic Site:  Hope College Informational Designation

Description of Historic Site:  In 1851 four years after the settlers from the Netherlands settled in the Holland area Albertus C. VanRaalte and Philp Phelps Jr. founded the Pioneer School.  Direction and funding for the school was contributed by the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America.  As the school evolved it went through two name changes first being the Holland Academy, which enrolled its first college class in 1862.  By May 1866 the schools name was changed to what we now know it to be today: Hope College. Its first 8 students graduated in July of 1866.  Hope’s name, seal, and motto come from a statement once given by Mr. Van Raalte, “This is my Anchor of Hope for this people in the future.”
