Name of Historic Site: Highland Park Summer Resort Informational Site
Description of Historic Site: Highland Park Summer Resort was a summer vacation destination for many well to do people that came from Detroit, Chicago, and other large cities as away to get away from the heat and smells of the summer as sanitation was not well developed. Highland was a city with in a city. They had their own by-laws that residents were happy to abide by. The cottages built with in the forested dunes as to not impact the ecosystem. People also came for the healing mineral springs that were discovered in Fruitport, Spring Lake, and Grand Haven in the early 1860’s. Highland Park stretched from Lake Avenue on the north to Grand Avenue to the South. Many of the original cottages are still used today.
