Allegan County – Michigan Historic Marker

Name of Historic Site:  Allegan County Informational Designation

Description of Historic Site:  The name “Allegan County” was coined by the noted student of the Indians, Henry Schoolcraft.  The county was set off in 1831 and organized in 1835.  Settlement of the Allegan seat was promoted in 1835 by eastern capitalist who were attracted to the area because of its large source of water power.  For many years steamboats piled the Kalamazoo river from Allegan to Saugatuck.  Extensive lumbering by pioneers cleared the way for farming.
